Love Tap ::: by Mark Keelan ::: Tiger Temple outside Kanchanaburi, Thailand, started as a refuge for injured wildlife in 1994, by a budhist monk. The first tiger cub arrived in 99 after its mother was killed by poachers near the Thai-Burma border. Unfortunately the little cub did not survive, but a few weeks later the monks were presented with more cubs, and so it began. Today there are about 30 tigers at the monastery ranging in age from 2 to 18 mths old. This photo shows 2 cubs roughly 9 mths old playing after breakfast, (although it looks like they are serious).

She was a little camera shy, must've been all those years of living in self denial, constantly being reminded that she was born a 'Girl',and in a patriarchal community she is no better than a 2nd class citizen. Amina earns 1.5 ~ 6 taka (0.085 USD) each day, working as a 'firewood bearer' who goes to and fro along the banks of the "Kaptai Lake" over a distance stretching one and a half mile, countless times, everyday. Despite all the difficulties growing up, 'Amina' retains a strange, stark beauty. A farcical gaze that tears through your very soul. A look that screams of hardship, gender discrimination,the failures of institutions like "UNICEF" & of a fake prerogative that calls itself "Nari Odhikar Aine"(Law of Women Rights).

Namibian Scarecrows ::: by Loic Brohard ::: Dead Vlei is a clay pan located near the more famous salt pan of Sossusvlei, inside the Namib-Naukluft Park in Namibia. Dead Vlei is surrounded by the highest sand dunes in the world, some reaching up to 300 meters, which rest on a sandstone terrace. The clay pan was formed after rainfall, when the Tsauchab river flooded, creating temporary shallow pools where the abundance of water allowed camel thorn trees to grow. When the climate changed, drought hit the area, and sand dunes encroached on the pan, which blocked the river from the area. The trees died, as there no longer was enough water to survive. The remaining skeletons of the trees (believed to be about 900 years old) are now black because the intense sun has scorched them. The wood does not decompose because it is so dry.

It was minus 15c but with the wind chill, was closer to minus 30c. We had pulled up for lunch in a small ravine and two of our dogs a male and a female were inseparable and kept each other warm during the break.

The Beautiful Game ::: by Maciej Tomczak ::: The image was taken in Burma (Myanmar), at Amarapura (not far from the U Bein bridge), some 11 km from Mandalay, in a Mandalay division. Picture taken in March 2005. The people on the picture are monks and novices from the Maha Gandhayon Monastery. I was just walking by. I was actually invited to play with them, but had a sprained knee and just sat there for a few hours. The novices are typically in their teens and either prepare for spending the life in the monastery, or just go there for a short period of time as a rite of passage (or sometimes to either receive schooling or spent vacation there). I suspect they like soccer... Soccer is really big in SE Asia - it doesn't require expensive equipment and it's probably a nice break from either the monastery or the politics.

Children of the Nile ::: by Samuel Ryo ::: I was in Uganda this summer as a medical volunteer in a clinic, wanting to have a first hand experience of daily life in a small village. During this period of time, I travelled to different parts of Uganda on the weekends, and found myself in the middle of a small community on the banks of the Nile in Jinja. Life seemed hard, but they were happy. The dirty river water was used by the people to carry out their daily chores, and not surprisingly the children were frolicking in the water. They were quick to notice the camera on my hand, and struck poses hoping I would snap a little moment of their daily lives. I merely gave them what they wanted.

Bridge of fears ::: by Pedro Pimentel ::: Choro Trek is without any doubt one of the most beautiful hikes(aprox. 4 days) you could do in the world. It is normally taken with guides or agencies but with a little of research anyone can do it. It starts at around 4000m with snow landscapes and finishes at around 300 m from sea level and in the middle of mosquito full bolivian jungle. Of course not all the bridges look very trustful... In this cases, nothing like having a fearless girlfriend to test them while you take the pictures.... Just in case!

The focus of this religion is on man, not gods; the assumption is that life is pain or suffering, which is a consequence of craving, and that suffering can end only if desire ceases.

More precisely, taken from Hill Inlet on Whitsunday Island, and showing Whitehaven Beach at the background. Whitehaven Beach is almost 6km long and consists of a very fine dazzling white sand that is 98% pure Silica!
