Great Sand Dunes National Park

Visitors to Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve take in the view from atop a dune while hiking in the park late one afternoon. Great Sand Dunes, located near Alamosa, Co., is the state's newest national park and features stunning sand dunes that rise more than 700 feet above the floor of the San Luis Valley. Last year the National Park Service completed the conversion of Great Sand Dunes from a national monument to a national park. The park now encompasses some 150,000 acres and the dunes were formed by blowing winds that have carried sand across the San Luis Valley and deposited them at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains for thousands of years.(Photo by MARC PISCOTTY)

Marc Piscotty is a two-time Pulitzer Prize winning photographer based in Denver, Co. He was a staff photographer at the Rocky Mountain News from April 1999 until February 2007. He worked for the Albuquerque (N.M.) Tribune for five years after graduating in 1994 from Western Kentucky University with a degree in photojournalism.

Everyday (from the 1st until the 28th), among all images uploaded by our contributors, we publish a photo of the day (POTD).
Every week (on the 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th), among all POTDs of the preceding week, we select a photo of the week (POTW).
On the 30th we select the best POTW as photo of the month (POTM).

The author of the POTM receives:
a US$50 gift certificate to Kiva + (in even-numbered months only) an invitation to be Photoburst's guest editor in the following month!
