Jhum Cultivation

Jhuming or shifting cultivation, popularly known as Sweden cultivation or cultivation of slash and burn, is the most prevalent form of cultivation in the hill areas of Bangladesh. Most tribal people are well acquainted with this type of farming. Jhuming is practiced on sloppy hills outside reserve forests. In Jhuming, seeds are sown after the first rain in April. A broad blade knife is used to sow the seeds. Crops are harvested in succession as they ripe between July and December. After that, the whole hill is burnt to make space for cultivating next year. Although the farmers claim that the burnt grasses act as compost and make the soil more fertile, studies have showed that harmful results of Jhum cultivation include reduction of soil fertility, erosion of land, deforestation, and siltation of rivers and lakes. And at the end the burning process seriously affects inhabitant wild life and endemic animal kingdom. Humans have been disturbing the nature since the civilization begins. And the same aggression goes on...

Photoburst is a photo of the day contest focusing on Travel Photography.

Everyday (from the 1st until the 28th), among all images uploaded by our contributors, we publish a photo of the day (POTD).
Every week (on the 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th), among all POTDs of the preceding week, we select a photo of the week (POTW).
On the 30th we select the best POTW as photo of the month (POTM).

The author of the POTM receives:
a US$50 gift certificate to Kiva + (in even-numbered months only) an invitation to be Photoburst's guest editor in the following month!
