Karen Girl

The Karen tribes widely known as Long Necks are originally from Burma. In the 80�s the Karens participated in demonstrations against the military dictatorship in Burma, becoming enemies of the state which led to persecution. Some have accused the military government of Burma of ethnic cleansing and suppression of religious freedom. The Thai government have created refugee camps for the Karens where they live in peace living by the land and creating beautiful handcrafts. This photograph was taken in the north of Thailand near Chiang Mai.

�Long Neck Karen" is only some smal subgroups of Karen. Karen are many female-dominated societes opposite the male-dominated Burman society. They had fight in more that 2300 years, interrupted of marriage of convenience, where a Burman king was marriage by one Karen princess. The present war begin in 1948, by the independence and continue today.

Photoburst is a photo of the day contest focusing on Travel Photography.

Everyday (from the 1st until the 28th), among all images uploaded by our contributors, we publish a photo of the day (POTD).
Every week (on the 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th), among all POTDs of the preceding week, we select a photo of the week (POTW).
On the 30th we select the best POTW as photo of the month (POTM).

The author of the POTM receives:
a US$50 gift certificate to Kiva + (in even-numbered months only) an invitation to be Photoburst's guest editor in the following month!
