Mowanjum Boy

In the culture of the Worora, Ngarinyin, and Wunumbul tribes, which make up the Mowanjum community outside Derby, Western Australia, the Wandjina is the supreme spirit being. Today, through the efforts of the Mowanjum elders and artists and many dedicated local people and businesses, the Wandjina culture is not being lost. Rather, as the artists continue to paint and the Mowanjum children begin to rediscover their own beliefs and heritage, the culture is evolving. This image is taken at Mowanjum where the largest traditional corroboree is open to the general public in Western Australia.

Ingetje Tadros

Renowned photographer and traveler Ingetje Tadros began a global photographic sojourn at seventeen. Leaving behind her small hometown of Bleiswijk in the Netherlands, she ambitiously set out to travel the planet. Over the course of 30 years of regular travel, she has visited more than 40 countries across six continents, all the while capturing striking images of the world's tribal people, and of lives and places that exist in relative obscurity. Her photography offers the viewer genuine moments of humanity and stunning expressive form. In March of 2011, Ingetje published her first book, Tribal Ethiopia, a testament of her passion for documenting tribal people and championing issues of social justice. The book's 286 photos document the indigenous tribes of the Omo River Valley and their plight as people threatened with the of loss of their ancestral homeland and economic livelihood to modern development; a proposed massive hydroelectric plant project would eventually flood their valley. Everyday (from the 1st until the 28th), among all images uploaded by our contributors, we publish a photo of the day (POTD).
Every week (on the 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th), among all POTDs of the preceding week, we select a photo of the week (POTW).
On the 30th we select the best POTW as photo of the month (POTM).

The author of the POTM receives:
a US$50 gift certificate to Kiva + (in even-numbered months only) an invitation to be Photoburst's guest editor in the following month!
